ANDY VALENTINE

Floating Points II. 2023.

Whilst far from fully resolved, I was satisfied with the way this picture combined elements of the previous two paintings below.

Floating Points II by Andy Valentine

Untitled. 2020. Oil on canvas

Floating Points. 2014. Oil, ink, pencil, yacht varnish on board.

This small work (30x30cm approx.) was finished in around 2014. It was the first entirely abstract painting I’d made at that point. For those who know his work my fondness for the geometric abstractions of Ben Nicholson is self evident, but I was also very interested in the work of the American artist Christopher Wool, at the time.

I retrospectively titled the painting “Floating Points”; the various elements of the painting sit frozen between layers of varnish. The title is lifted from one of the pre-set sounds of an analogue synthesiser.
